Town Facts

avonbythesea_townclockThe Borough of Avon-By-The-Sea is a beautiful residential and recreational resort community located in the southeastern portion of Monmouth County along the Atlantic Ocean and Shark River. The Borough consists mainly of one-family houses, several apartments and condominiums. It is bound on the north by the Borough of Bradley Beach and on the south by the Borough of Belmar. It has a land area of about four-tenths of one square mile and a year-round population of approximately 2,100. The Borough is governed by a three-member Board of Commissioners.

The Borough has a municipal complex which houses the Borough Administrative Offices, the Municipal Court and the Police and Fire Departments. The Municipal Complex is located on Main Street in front of a park and includes a recreational facility with a gymnasium which is extensively used by youth and senior citizen groups. The Borough also has a park containing a ball field, and a recreational area with tennis courts.

In addition to its beautiful beaches, the Borough has a municipally owned and operated pool and a boardwalk spanning the entire length of the Borough. One marina is located in the Borough on the Shark River and contains facilities for boating and fishing.

Utilities
Water and Sewer Utility Systems are municipally owned and serve the entire Borough. In addition, the Borough is serviced by the Neptune Sewerage Authority which provides secondary sewerage treatment to the Borough and surrounding communities. Electricity and gas are provided by two privately owned utility companies.

Schools
A fine school for elementary children is located in the center of the community, and high school students are sent to nearby schools on a tuition basis.

Fire, Police and First Aid
The Borough is serviced by its own volunteer Fire Department and First Aid Squad, both of which are efficient and fully equipped. The Borough has a full-time police force consisting of a Chief and eleven officers.

Transportation
The Borough is served by the New Jersey Transit railroad with stations located in the two adjoining towns. In addition, the Monmouth County Airport and the Garden State Parkway are located near the Borough. Bus service is available from the Borough to New York on a daily basis. Interstate 95 has its eastern terminus in the Borough of Belmar, which adjoins the Borough on the south, with connections to the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Turnpikes.

Community Development
The community is almost fully developed and operates under a comprehensive Master Plan and Zoning Ordinance dated January 2006.
