Garbage Collection & Recycle Programs

 

All Avon residents are provided with the following curbside/lane collections: trash, cans, glass and plastic bottles, newspapers, cardboard, mixed paper, leaves, brush, tree limbs, freon units, bulk items, metal items, tires, dried paint and Christmas trees.

Items that we cannot collect are: undried paint, household hazardous waste, concrete, asphalt, asbestos, grass, propane tanks, fluorescent bulbs/thermometers, rechargeable and button batteries and electronics.

Items that can be brought to the Avon recycling area are: cans and bottles, newspapers, cardboard, used motor oil, used antifreeze, car batteries, rechargeable and button batteries, junk mail and electronics.

Note: Homeowners are responsible for informing all renters, tenants and/or guests of all rules and regulations.


Trash Collection
Trash is collected twice a week, Mondays and Thursdays (Click here for exact dates for Trash Collection), throughout the entire town. When a holiday falls on a Monday, trash collection will be on the Friday preceding the holiday and on the Tuesday after the holiday. Garbage cans must have handles and lids and cannot be larger than 32 gallons. No single can is to weigh more than 50 lbs. (ord. # 107.7.a). Do not allow cans to fill with water. Do not tie lids directly to the cans. Trash mixed with recycling will not be collected. Click here for exact dates for Trash Collection.

Recycling Center
Located at Jefferson Ave and South Station Ave.
Hours
Hours – Monday through Friday 8:00 am to 2:00 pm
Saturday 8:00 am to 2:00 pm
Sundays and Holidays Closed

Please download our RECYCLE COACH APP. Enter zip code or Avon by the Sea for the specific borough page.

Empty all recyclables into appropriate dumpsters marked for recycling. Do not leave recycling in bags. Please empty. All recycling can be mixed together in any available recycling dumpster.

What is accepted – tin cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles, newspaper, cardboard, junk mail, used motor oil, used antifreeze and car batteries.
Used motor oil and antifreeze must be in disposable containers.
This area is for Avon residents ONLY and for recycling ONLY.

Bulk Items
Bulk items are collected on the 2nd trash collection of the week. (Click here for exact dates for Trash Collection). Please call ahead or email.

Contractors are responsible for the removal of ALL construction debris.

Paint
All paint will be collected along with your regular household trash ONLY if it is completely dried out and the lids are removed. Note: Mixing paint with kitty litter will help speed the drying process.

Freon Units
Refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, dehumidifiers and any other products that contain freon have a charge of $25.00 per unit. The fee is payable to the Borough of Avon. Please include the address and telephone number. Once payment is received, we will collect the unit/units. (Always remember to remove the doors from refrigerators and freezers.)

Tires
There is a fee of $3 per tire for automobiles and small pickups. $5 per tire for large trucks. Tires must not have rims. The fee is payable to the Borough of Avon. Once payment is received, we will collect the tire/s. Please include the address and telephone number.

Fluorescent Bulbs/Thermometers
DO NOT DISPOSE OF THESE PRODUCTS IN YOUR TRASH.
These products contain a small amount of mercury. They can not be brought to the borough recycling facility. If you would like to dispose of these materials, you may bring them unbroken to some home centers ie Home Depot. Call ahead to make sure they are accepted. Large quantity used fluorescent bulb generators ( offices, stores, etc. ) can order the appropriate boxes from the internet to have the used bulbs shipped out and recycled. Click here for more information on mercury.

Household Hazardous Waste
All hazardous waste must be taken to the Monmouth County Reclamation Center in Tinton Falls. Please call ahead for an appointment and directions at 732-683-8686.

Examples of household hazardous waste: paint thinner, roofing tar, mercury thermometers, household cleaning products, pesticides, gasoline, etc. A copy of the Monmouth County Recycling Directory is available outside the gate of the Avon recycling area

Grass
We do not collect grass. Grass should be mulched and left on the lawn. Do not blow grass into the street. If you prefer to dispose of your grass clippings they can be taken to the Monmouth County Reclamation Center, 6000 Asbury Ave, Tinton Falls. Please call ahead at 732-683-8686.

Leaves
Leaves are collected loose in the street only between October 1st and December 1st. They should be free of any other yard debris, grass and trash and kept four feet from the curb. All other times of the year, small amounts of leaves are to be bagged and put out with your trash.

We collect leaves starting with all main roads to facilitate the run-off of rainwater to the catch basins. We then move on to all secondary streets and lanes.
Please do not park vehicles on top of the leaves.

Tree Limbs/Yard Waste
Tree limbs are to be cut to 4-foot lengths and tied in manageable bundles. Small amounts of yard waste and brush are to be bagged and put out in the lane, or at the curb if you do not have access to a lane. Call ahead if you will have more than half of a standard pickup truck sized load.
Christmas Trees
Christmas trees are collected at least once a week after the season. They must be free of bases,decorations,lights and any other items. Do not place them in bags. They are picked up from the street or lanes of town, not yards.

Batteries
Old car batteries can be dropped off at the Public Works yard during regular business hours.

Household batteries, ie. AAA, AA, C, D, 9v, can be thrown out with your regular household trash.

Rechargeable batteries should be brought to retail store drop offs. Check www.call2recycle.org for drop off locations.

Silver “button batteries” should be returned to retail stores or to county sponsored drops Mon Cty Drop Off Sites, or can be brought to the borough office.

Landscapers
Landscapers are responsible for the removal of all grass, brush, yard waste, limbs and any spring and fall cleaning. At no time of year should any of these items be put in the street. Landscapers ARE allowed to put out leaves loose in the streets between October 1st and December 1st only. Please notify your landscaper of Avon’s rules and regulations.

Metal Items
Metal is a separate pick up. We collect metal on average once every two to three weeks. Please call before putting out for collection.

Electronics
The list of electronics below have to be recycled as per “ The Electronic Waste Management Act “ of New Jersey. State Law prohibits computers and TV’s and certain other electronics from being disposed of in the trash. They must be recycled.

Items to recycle:
TV’s (without wood cabinets), computers, computer monitors, laptops, hard drives, printers, fax machines, scanners, keyboards, mice, cables, radios, phones, cameras, VCR’s, DVD players, stereo components.

You are responsible for removing data from hard drives.
There is an “Avon Residents Only” drop off area at the Public Works recycling center. Please leave in the designated area.

Most all electronic retailers are required take your old TV or computer when purchasing a new one.
