With records on street maintenance dating as far back as 1904, Avon-by-the-Sea's Public Works department works as the backbone of our community.

Today, our current public works department consists of a full-time superintendent and seven full-time employees. Some of their responsibilities include street repair and maintenance, trash pick-up, beachfront maintenance and the overseeing and maintaining of all municipal facilities. All of this work is done in all kinds of weather.

Trash: Have your trash out BEFORE 6:00 a.m. on the day of pick-up. For those residents that have access to a lane, put your trash there. For those of you who are "walk-ins," do not put your trash out any earlier than 24 hours. Trash pickup is twice a week on Mondays and Thursdays for the whole town. Click here for additional Trash information.

All garbage must be in cans with lids per borough ordinance!

Recycling: Recycling pick-up will be on the 1st,3rd and 5th (if applicable)Wednesdays of each month for the entire town. The Public Works Department is now collecting recycling as single stream. Place items loose in the can. No plastic bags. Please flatten cardboard. Click here for additional Recycling information.

The following items can all be mixed together in a single container for recycling: tin cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic bottles #1- #3, newspaper, cardboard, office paper, envelopes, computer paper, chip board (ie. cereal type boxes ), junk mail. All of these items are collected from your residence or business. Put your recyclables out the night before - the men start early in the morning. Your recyclables must be in the lane and separate from trash cans or, if you are a walk-in, put at the curb in proper containers where they are easily seen. Do not put lids on the containers. Mark your containers with an "R" or "Recycling" and pull them out to the edge of the street so they are easily identified as recyclables. Please remember that GLASS MEANS BOTTLES ONLY. It does not include drinking glasses, dishes, plate glass, windows, light bulbs etc. These items belong in the garbage. The recycling drop-off center is located at the Public Works Yard at the corner of Jefferson Ave and South Station Ave. It is open Monday through Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Drop-off center is closed on Sundays & holidays. Things that are accepted: glass bottles, tin cans, plastic bottles, aluminum cans, junk mail, cardboard, newspapers, televisions and computers. No cords, toasters, microwaves, other plastics or bulky waste of any kind.

Please do not put anything in the street or gutter at any time (except leaves between October 1st and December 1st). If you have hired a contractor for your landscaping, please notify them that they are responsible for the removal of all grass, brush, branches and any spring and fall cleaning.

Bulky itemsDo not bring bulk or metal items to the Borough yard! It will be picked up curbside or in the lane. Please E-Mail Public Works ahead of time for collection.

Leaves: Leaves are collected loose in the street only between October 1st and December 1st. All other times of the year, small amounts of leaves are to be bagged and put out for a separate pickup.

Brush: Brush will be picked up by Public Works if it is cut into 4-foot lengths and tied in bundles. Please call to schedule collection.

Christmas Trees:   Trees are collected as they are placed out. We collect trees at least once a week until they are all collected. They must be free of bases, ornaments, lights and any other decorations. Do not put them in bags.

Landscapers: Landscapers are responsible for the removal of all grass, brush, yard waste, limbs and any spring and fall cleaning. At no time of year should any of these items be put in the street. Landscapers ARE allowed to put out leaves loose in the streets between October 1st and December 1st only. Please notify your landscaper of Avon’s rules and regulations.
